Additional Info

Scott A. Shapiro, MD

From the moment Scott Shapiro, MD, joined the faculty at IU School of Medicine, he made it his mission to help prepare healers entrusted with some of the most intricate work in medicine.

For the next 33 years, Shapiro, who retired in June 2021, trained more than 55 neurosurgeons who passed through the department’s residency program. Twice, he was honored with the IU Trustees Teaching Award. He was often selected by residents for the departmental yearly faculty teaching award. In 2002, Shapiro was named the Robert L. Campbell Professor for Neurosurgery.

A gift to this fund impacts future surgeons at one of the nation’s oldest and best residency programs. At any given time, 18 to 20 future physicians are progressing steadily along a seven-year track, rotating among IU Health Methodist Hospital, Eskenazi Hospital, Riley Hospital for Children, and the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center—three of which also have Level I trauma centers.

By their fifth year, residents have time to diversify their skill sets. They can explore clinical electives or participate in laboratory research. The residency program also offers them the chance to earn an MBA from the Kelley School of Business, join a global health exchange in Kenya through AMPATH, or pursue their master’s degree in public health. Much of this evolution unfolded under Shapiro’s tenure. It’s also the same program that shaped him after he graduated from the School of Medicine in 1981.

Thank you for supporting professorships and/or chairs that enable the department to offer this comprehensive experience to residents!

Your giving matters

Mitesh V. Shah, MD

The fondness Dr. Shapiro's trainees have for him can never be measured but only experienced by listening to their recollected stories. He allowed autonomy in the operating room, but was always ever-present at the right moment. His discussions at conferences were always didactic but so very entertaining. He said what others were too shy or afraid to say.

Mitesh V. Shah, MD Chair, Department of Neurological Surgery
