Diversity Recruitment Scholarship

IUSM Scholarships and Loans

Three decades of research tell us that if minority patients see doctors of their own race or background, they will visit more often, readily accept a diagnosis, and embrace treatment. They also report higher satisfaction with their care and feel those doctors better listen to them. Through this scholarship, Indiana can retain its most talented students and train more physicians who may consider a career caring for underserved populations.

Additional Info

Currently, health challenges in Indiana's Black and Latino communities are daunting. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports these populations lag in more than 70 health categories, from diabetes to heart disease, HIV to infant mortality.

When offered the option, people prefer to see a doctor who understands them. But minority patients can't always find a doctor like them. In Indiana, there is approximately one Black doctor for every 3,200+ Black residents. And Latinos face an even worse disparity: one doctor for every 4,600+ Latinos living in Indiana. There's one clear solution: train more minority physicians.

This scholarship helps the IU School of Medicine remain competitive in student recruitment and allows students to make their choice based on fit and not finances. By helping us train more doctors to serve patients from underrepresented backgrounds, your support of this critical need will truly change lives.
