School of Medicine Department of Neurology

IU School of Medicine researchers are exploring ways to reduce the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and improve quality of life for patients. For instance, they're studying the effects of deep brain stimulation (as well as focused ultrasound) on motor control areas of the brain, with the goal of reducing tremors and improving balance. Researchers are also examining potential new drug therapies, the role of genetics, environmental toxins, and the benefits of art therapy for Parkinson’s disease.

Additional Info

IU School of Medicine’s Department of Neurology is one of just 35 designated Parkinson’s Foundation Centers of Excellence in the nation and the only one in Indiana. Its research spans multiple areas, including initiatives such as:

  • Clinical trials of new Parkinson’s medicines, including drugs to treat the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, as well as drugs to slow the course of the disease
  • Studies on the role of environmental toxins—such as manganese in welders and chlorpyrifos in veterans—that may contribute to Parkinson's disease risk
  • Genetic research in Parkinson’s disease, as new drugs are being developed that may target a specific Parkinson’s disease gene
  • Projects that use sensors to examine arm movements and measure gait changes in patients
  • Studies on how to improve patients' quality of life—for instance, the impact of Rock Steady Boxing and the role of art therapy
