Additional Info

Students work on a patient, while others monitor vitals.

Gifts to the Department of Emergency Medicine help us train outstanding physicians and ensure patients benefit from exceptional care. There are several departmental priority areas where your gifts can make a difference, such as:

Simulation
Effective emergency physicians understand every second is crucial. Our simulation facility enables physicians to replicate scenarios, learn new skills, and sharpen old ones. It's where teams of physicians, nurses, paramedics, and others foster chemistry and coordination. Physicians can get instant feedback and focus on areas they want to improve.

Wellness and Mental Health
Emergency medicine physicians face the highest burnout rate in medicine. We’re addressing the issue by creating a culture of wellness and working to eliminate the stigma of mental health challenges. Peer support and access to mental health services are key interventions. We are also addressing issues that impact wellness, such as reducing known factors that impact burnout. Less time in front of the electronic health record and more time with patients is a major goal.

Advancing Health Equity
Eliminating disparities in access and quality of care is an important clinical and research area for the department. Such work begins well before a patient's time in the ER. It begins by ensuring emergency physicians reflect our community demographics. Scholarships are a critical tool for underrepresented groups to practice in the field. We're also researching underlying causes of disparities, applying evidence-based strategies to improve care, access, and inclusivity.

Gender Equity
The department is working to advance gender equity. We offer leadership, mentorship, and professional development opportunities to empower women to lead both the specialty and the department. We are also exploring underlying causes of gender imbalances within the field.

Point-of-Care Ultrasound
Our department trains up to 400 medical students annually with this innovative diagnostic tool. Handheld ultrasound helps physicians get a rapid diagnosis. That trims critical minutes from bedside procedures, spares patients from invasive procedures, and avoids exposing them to radiation in traditional imaging. Support of our faculty and learners can help provide a cutting-edge curriculum.
