Additional Info
With a contribution to the Pathology Education and Research Fund, you can help the department meet long-term needs and have a flexible pool of resources to draw on as opportunities arise.
Areas that might benefit from your generosity include, but are not limited to:
- Training medical technologists: Health systems in Indiana and nationwide are in need of more pathologists to run instruments and process tests, yet the number of programs offering that training is shrinking. To meet that need, IU has partnered with Deaconess Health System to launch a pilot program in Evansville, Indiana. The Department of Pathology needs additional resources to hire more faculty and acquire and maintain cutting-edge equipment. Over time, your support can help hundreds of individuals pursue a fulfilling career and ensure hospitals in underserved areas have the resources they need to provide timely and outstanding care to Hoosiers and patients everywhere.
- Maintaining an invaluable research resource: At IU, we have collected more than 2,500 brains from donors that span the spectrum of conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. This repository can be a vital resource for our colleagues worldwide. With charitable support, the department could expand the size of this biobank and fund more rigorous analysis. Your gift could help us sustain a tool that can outline how these diseases work and potentially aid in the discovery of biomarkers and future drug targets.
- Applying the power of machine learning: We are taking early steps in using artificial intelligence and machine learning. For example, an IU Health Methodist Hospital lab uses instruments to scan blood tests and AI to analyze them while a pathologist verifies the results. Over time, our experts could add clinical outcomes and medical histories, creating a nuanced tool to reach a diagnosis quickly. Meanwhile, a team of researchers is developing algorithms capable of analyzing large troves of medical images to create new tools. At IU, we’re fortunate to have ready access to supercomputing power that can carry out complex requests in a matter of hours.
With your support of this fund, we can purchase equipment, recruit faculty, grow our expertise in this quickly emerging field, and meet the other needs and priorities of the department. Your support does more than put IU School of Medicine at the leading edge—it improves how we diagnose disease, delivering better results faster and speeding up care delivery. Thank you for your generous support!
