Additional Info
Born from the efforts of Indiana University South Bend students and professors, the Civil Rights Heritage Center transformed a once-segregated city swimming pool into an active learning center. It explores the civil rights struggles of the past so that people can take action in the present and build a better future.
Your contributions provide resources for the center to further its three key pillars: education, culture, and activism.
Education:
- Events like our regular film series pairing a nationally acclaimed documentary with a local panel to discuss the film’s impact in our community;
- Lectures on topics of local and national history, social justice, and more—centering voices of marginalized and oppressed communities;
- Our African American Landmark Tour, featuring histories of seventeen sites of local significance;
- Our oral history podcast, South Bend’s Own Words, featuring voices of people who shaped local history.
Culture:
- Exhibitions featuring local artists and amplifying local stories and talent;
- Our monthly Poetry Den spoken word showcase with an open mic and featured artist;
- Celebrations of music.
Activism:
- Open community conversations gathering people around important topics like racial equity in healthcare, economic disparities, policing and public safety, and many more.
