The Civil Rights Heritage Center (CRHC) is an extension of the IU South Bend campus. As such, it operates as a space for students, faculty, administrators, student organizations, and other university entities to meet, hold classes, and engage with the larger community. Faculty from various departments hold single class sessions as well as full-semester courses at the CRHC, and several student organizations use the facility to hold meetings and events. Additionally, the CRHC serves as a model for the commitment IU South Bend has to community engagement through its relationships with institutions and organizations in South Bend, including municipal departments, area universities, and the arts community.

The Clemente Course in the Humanities (CCH) is a year-long, two-semester course of study for adults who have faced barriers to higher education. Students take evening classes in philosophy, art history, US history, literature, and critical thinking and writing. All courses are taught by university professors and offer up to six college credits, which initially will be given by Bard College. The course is totally free to students, including books and other materials, with support for childcare and transportation.

The CCH was awarded the National Humanities Medal from the National Endowment for the Humanities in 2014. Your support helps ensure that we can offer this life-changing opportunity for free. Thank you for your generosity!

Your giving matters

Clemente students reach a point in their studies when the light comes on. After being related to as if they are not smart enough to engage with the humanities, they come to realize that they have been asking these questions and having discussions about the ideas being raised all along. They develop their own independent ideas and learn how to master complex information.
