For many first-generation students, the college experience is more challenging, since they have to navigate a new environment without previous parental experience to help guide them. Many also grapple with a lack of financial support and access to other resources. In fact, research shows that over 33 percent of first-generation students leave college within three years of starting, primarily due to financial burdens. 

Across all IU campuses, there are more than 18,000 first-generation students, each one poised to make a positive impact on our campuses and communities for generations to come. President Whitten is committed to championing academic excellence and student success, which includes providing essential access and necessary resources for first-generation students.
