Fritz Westenfelder Award

Indiana University Student Foundation Scholarships

Those who have participated in the Little 500 know that it is so much more than a bicycle race. It's an opportunity for IU Bloomington students to become leaders, build community, and dedicate themselves to a cause bigger than themselves.

Being a Little 500 rider also requires a significant investment of time and money. Scholarships like this can help more students access the benefits of participating in this time-honored IU tradition.

Men's Little 500 riders race at Bill Armstrong Stadium.

Frederick “Fritz” Westenfelder was a Little 500 rider for Alpha Tau Omega who, in his rookie year, sprinted to a third-place finish in the 1981 race. Fritz had an indomitable spirit with a true gift for motivation and leadership. His genuine enthusiasm for life, camaraderie, and competition were contagious and apparent to all who knew him.

Tragically, Fritz was killed in a motorcycle accident the week before the 1982 Little 500. His death shook the campus and cycling communities, and friends and family came together to establish this scholarship in his memory. The scholarship is awarded annually to a Little 500 rider, male or female, who best exemplifies leadership, enthusiasm, and strength of character—just as Fritz did.
