Additional Info
Lifelong sports enthusiast John Miley started his sports broadcast collection as a high school student in 1947, recording audio of his favorite games. Now, more than seven decades later, he continues to add to his recordings.
Miley’s compilation includes World Series games from 1954 to present (with several additional series from as early as 1934), most of the MLB All-Star games, every Super Bowl game, more than 1,000 games with play-by-play by Harry Caray, and half a century of Kentucky Derby and Indianapolis 500 races. His collection also contains recordings of college and pro football and basketball, hockey, golf, and more.
Contributions to this fund provide general support for the collection. Among other important needs, your gift could be used for the maintenance, preservation, and digitization of the collection, which is currently housed on analog reel-to-reel tape, VHS, and other linear formats. Digitizing the collection will make it accessible for decades to come, to assist students and researchers who are studying sports broadcasting techniques and cultural influence.
The John Miley Media School Collection is an invaluable resource for IU and students in The Media School, as it will provide a connection to remarkable sports broadcasters and assist in developing future sports media professionals. Thank you for supporting this important work!
