Additional Info
Although the current BA in Fashion Design was only established in 2011, Indiana University has a much longer tradition of teaching classes on textiles and clothing, dating back to 1913, when Elizabeth Sage was hired.
Clothing is a basic human need, but what we wear tells others vital information about ourselves. Fashion—and more broadly, adornment of the body—is a powerful medium for self-expression. We use it to explore who we are as unique individuals, but also to visually communicate our alliances with other people, times, and places.
Wearing a piece of clothing developed by your favorite artist or designer not only shows your appreciation for that person, but also connects you to others who feel the same way. For example:
"This designer makes people of all sizes look and feel beautiful; I feel beautiful."
"This business turns worn-out clothing into wearable art; I value keeping things out of landfills."
"Look at this jacket made of Harris tweed from Scotland; I am proud to be the kind of person who keeps historic traditions alive."
