With IPE, the study of sustainability and the environment bridges the arts, humanities, and sciences. Our students examine natural and human systems as they intersect with our economy, our culture, and our society. IPE provides students with the tools they'll need to solve complex environmental problems and lead the world to a sustainable future.

A gift to IPE supports opportunities for students to engage in hands-on sustainability research across disciplines as early as their first semester on campus, through programs like IPE's Sustainability Scholars. Current freshman and sophomore projects include migratory bird studies, heat mapping, plant resilience testing, examinations of how religious communities react to climate change, studies of how to decolonize conservation practices, and more. These students frequently go on to do self-directed research, assist with faculty projects, or even pursue a placement in climate action planning with prominent public, private, and nonprofit organizations across the Hoosier state. Thanks to your support, student experiences make an immediate impact.

Our students walk the walk of environmental protection—and they do it in muddy boots. That's because at IPE, we do research beyond the lab, and teach beyond the classroom. Undergraduate scholarships and student research grants support interdisciplinary coursework, outdoor service learning, and student-led projects in diverse natural environments just steps from campus. And our eight Research and Teaching Preserve properties make up over 1,600 acres of land that turn campus into a living lab for immersive student experiences.

You don’t even need to be enrolled in a university course to learn; a gift to IPE also supports educational programming for the whole community, from youth to adult. Field outings, workshops, volunteer opportunities, and civic science data collection are ways in which you assist IPE in connecting everyone to nature.

IPE is a partnership between the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the School of Public Health. Through our 35 academic degree programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels, over 160 affiliated faculty across disciplines, and 12 affiliate centers and institutes, we address environmental and sustainability topics from every angle. Your support reaches students in multiple areas on the Bloomington campus and ensures that our world is prepared for environmental change, from the ground up.
