Each year, Indiana University Cinema hosts hundreds of programs for IU students, faculty, staff, and Bloomington community members. Committed to providing film for all, the Cinema provides more than half of programs completely free of charge. However, IU Cinema still incurs costs for providing required tickets to those events, and we do not want those costs to impact our ability to free ticketing, particularly for our thousands of student attendees each year.
Film is a powerful and transformative educational and cultural tool, one that brings communities together and the world to Bloomington. No one should be denied access to it based on economic limitations. That is why IU Cinema is committed to providing more than half of its yearly ticketed programming—film screenings, festivals, industry visits, panels, Q&A’s and more—completely free of charge.
Free of charge to the audience, that is. Every free ticket issued costs IU Cinema $1.00. In 2024 alone, the Cinema spent over $7,500 underwriting free tickets to our programs. A gift of $50 could potentially support 10 students attending IU Cinema for free.
We remain 100% invested in the number of free tickets we have always provided, but we need your help to support the costs for doing so. Your gift today will go directly to the IU Cinema Fund, which supports all of the work of the Cinema, including our invaluable commitment to free tickets, ensuring everyone has access to the transformative power of film, art, and community on IU Bloomington’s campus.
