Jacobs Virtual Academy IU Day Campaign

By Jacobs School of Music

Gifts will be matched 1:1 up to $10,000 thanks to the generosity of Mary H. Wennerstrom Phillips.

The Jacobs Virtual Academy (JVA) expands access to high-quality music education for middle and high school students across Indiana, especially those who might not otherwise receive individualized lessons. Through a mix of online instruction and monthly in-person visits, students study instrumental and vocal music, music theory, and music technology while building meaningful relationships with Jacobs School of Music mentors.

Your gift to JVA creates a dual impact. It supports young musicians in community partner programs and provides paid, professional field experience for Jacobs students who serve as Teaching Artists. Just $5,000 underwrites one semester for 14 students, covering Teaching Artist salaries and creating vital on-campus employment opportunities, especially for international students who are unable to work off campus.

By supporting the Jacobs Virtual Academy on IU Day, you help remove barriers to music education, fund hands-on learning for Jacobs students, and strengthen IU’s connection to communities across the state. Your generosity ensures that young musicians feel welcomed on campus, inspired by their experiences, and supported by a university that believes in access, mentorship, and the power of music.

JVA Values:

  • High-quality music education: Build bridges among Jacobs early-career educators, IU language students, and community partner schools/organizations
  • Community partnerships: Establish community engagement relationships that mutually uplift IU students and JVA partners
  • Accessible lessons: Enhance access to music education across geography, language, and economic need
