The Vision
Created in IU’s Hamilton Lugar School in 2018, the 21st Century Japan Politics and Society Initiative (21JPSI) is a unique Midwestern hub for teaching, research, and events about one of America’s most vital global partners and treaty allies.

Japan is not only the U.S.’ "indispensable ally" as America confronts an ever-expanding array of complex foreign policy challenges in East Asia and beyond. It is also the leading foreign investor and job creator in Indiana and the Midwest.

21JPSI offers a unique platform for students to regularly learn about and debate related issues through focused coursework and event series featuring leading scholars and policymakers from both countries.

Why Your Support Matters
Your gift provides the essential support needed to sustain and expand 21JPSI’s unique mission at a public university in the U.S. heartland. By contributing, you help level the playing field for IU students by facilitating educational, networking, mentorship, and research opportunities typically only available to those at elite coastal universities.

With your help, we can:

  • Host Global Thought Leaders: Support our annual speaker series and help bring to campus leading scholars and policymakers to share their expertise with and inspire our students.
  • Foster Professional Networks: Create networking opportunities that connect IU students, faculty, and the community with leaders in diplomacy, business, academia, and civil society.
  • Fund Groundbreaking Research: Help fund essential research in Japan on topics of direct policy relevance.
  • Convene National Dialogues: Support conferences and workshops that encourage civil discourse and exchange on real-world policy challenges affecting both Japan and the United States.

The Impact: From the Classroom to the Global Stage
Our goal is not just to educate—it is to inspire. 21JPSI is committed to supporting the next generation of leaders of the U.S.-Japan relationship in business, government, and academia.
