In a competitive application process, more than 30 students per year are placed in paid service-learning internships with Indiana local governments, nonprofits, and businesses, where they gain essential sustainability career skills and apply real-world sustainability solutions. Gifts to this fund help ERI provide financial support to these students for their valuable work.

Hundreds of McKinney Climate Fellows (MCF) have contributed 100,000+ hours of service to the state of Indiana. From developing commercial composting systems to implementing municipal climate action plans, MCF gives IU students the chance to put their studies into practice to achieve real results for Indiana.

And the benefits keep expanding: McKinney Climate Fellows have gone on to work in meaningful sustainability careers in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors, with 75 percent working in climate jobs in the U.S. after graduation, and 50 percent staying to work in Indiana.

The McKinney Climate Fellows program is a win-win: IU students develop real-world sustainability career skills while Indiana’s climate resilience is advancing through solutions that are being implemented right now.
