Experiential learning is central to how students explore their potential futures and expand their understanding of the world around them. Through field-based research and immersive study abroad, students move beyond the classroom to test ideas in context, develop real-world skills, and gain confidence navigating an interconnected world.
South Asia offers a uniquely important setting—home to dynamic economies, democratic experimentation, environmental change, and vibrant cultural traditions. Through the Dhar India Studies Program, Indiana University graduate students have conducted research across the region, documenting lesser-known languages, examining governance and inequality, and studying water systems and environmental politics.
“The Dhar India Studies Program Travel-Research Fellowship was super helpful in taking care of many expenses for my 2025 summer research, the main ones including the local travel and field data collection. Since my research is based in remote rural areas of Uttarakhand, with infrequent public transportation service, I had to rent scooters. While on the field, the fellowship money also supported my lodging and refreshment for respondents.”

Your IU Day gift helps students like Yogesh thrive. By giving to the Dhar India Studies Program Fund, you sustain our programs and open doors to opportunities such as graduate student summer field research across South Asia. A gift of $4,000 will help launch IU’s first faculty-led winter study abroad course in India—making immersive learning with local communities accessible to more students.
By reducing financial barriers, your generosity empowers students to learn through experience—pushing beyond comfort zones, collaborating with local communities, and engaging with real-world questions of peace, justice, and sustainability. Together, we can ensure that every student with the drive to explore has the opportunity to make a global impact.
