Wilma Gibbs Moore.

Unravel the vibrant tapestry of Wilma Lee Gibbs Moore’s remarkable life, woven with threads of resilience, determination, and an unwavering commitment to inclusivity.

Raised in the heart of Indianapolis during the era of segregation, Wilma’s journey is a testament to the power of education and community. After graduating from Indiana University, Wilma made groundbreaking contributions to the Indiana University Library, with her passion for preserving and interpreting African American heritage in Indiana. She also served as the senior archivist of African American History at the Indiana History Center, with over 30 years of experience and influence. Both IU and Indiana have recognized her invaluable contributions, bestowing on her many awards and accolades for her profound impact on the numerous historical organizations she served.

Not only did Wilma advocate for ensuring that history mirrors our diverse reality, she also championed diversity within her profession. "Your history is who you are, and when you get to a point where you somehow discount it or think it’s not important, you really diminish yourself," she said.

Thank you for helping honor this profound legacy and shape the library and information science leaders of tomorrow!

Your giving matters

Being awarded the Wilma Moore Scholarship is both humbling and exhilarating. I know that this program will equip me to become a school library media specialist in the future.
