The Arthur and Katherine White Fellowship in Infectious Diseases honors Arthur C. White, MD, who established the Infectious Diseases Division at IU School of Medicine in 1967. Under his leadership, the division gained a national reputation for excellence in research, education, and patient care. Dr. White’s mentorship and vision shaped the field of infectious diseases and inspired generations of physicians and scientists.
Born in Williamsburg, Kentucky, Dr. White completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Kentucky and earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1952. He trained at Vanderbilt University Hospital.
Following his fellowship, he established the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Louisville, serving as its director from 1959 to 1962. He then led the infectious diseases program at the Medical College of Georgia from 1963 to 1967 before coming to Indiana University, where he founded and directed one of the nation’s leading divisions in the field. Dr. White served as Chief of Infectious Diseases at the school from 1967 to 1988 and remained a dedicated faculty member until 1996. He passed away in 1999 from leukemia.
Income from gifts to this fund will provide financial support for fellows in the second, third, or fourth year of infectious disease training who demonstrate an interest in research and academic medicine. Preference is given to fellows in later years of training, as they prepare for careers as laboratory or clinical investigators. Recipients gain opportunities to advance their expertise, conduct independent research, and contribute to innovations that improve the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases.
Through this fellowship, donors honor the legacy of Dr. Arthur and Katherine White and their commitment to nurturing the next generation of physician-scientists in infectious diseases. Thank you for your support!
