What do we do?

Activities consist of teaching and learning basic and applied research, community outreach and public education, international partnerships and networking, and development and support of campus sustainability efforts. A portion of gifts to this fund may also support (a) sustainability award(s) for recognizing outstanding contributions to sustainability at IUSB or in the community. The award recipient(s) will be decided upon by a committee selected by, and in consultation with, the director of the Center for a Sustainable Future.

This fund has also been used to support student workers engaged in projects such as:

  • Community gardening on campus
  • Reduction of Styrofoam usage in campus food services
  • IUSB’s achievement of Bee Campus USA certification, Tree Campus USA certification, and STARS certification
  • Earth Day celebrations

Where do we plan to be?

Because our sustainability work is focused on the campus and community, the pandemic brought much of it to a halt. As campus life has returned to normal, we are again planning and implementing sustainability initiatives with the help of the Sustainable Future Fund. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Reviving our campus food waste composting program
  • A Sustainability Index that operates as a catalog of sustainability-related people, organizations, and resources in the Michiana area. The Index will live on our website and be a hub for information and connection.
  • A “toxic tour” and “beauty tour” of Northern Indiana
  • Earth Day events on campus
  • A speaker series to bring campus and community together
  • An end-of-the-year collection of unwanted household products from student housing to be donated
  • A Seeing Systems workshop group open to the public
  • An honors student film, in collaboration with the center and hosted on our website, set as a conversation with IUSB students about their thoughts on climate change and the future

The Sustainable Future Fund is supported by generous donations from individuals who recognize IU South Bend's importance to sustainability in the Michiana area. We are grateful for your continuing support.
