Additional Info
The retina is a thin layer of tissue that lets us see the world. When it is damaged by disease, aging, or injury, vision can fade or disappear completely. The Retina Research Fund at the IU School of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology supports studies that aim to protect and restore this vital part of the eye.
The department's researchers are exploring how the retina changes in diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and retinal degeneration caused by genetic or inflammatory conditions. Our experts lead projects that look at how blood vessels, nerve cells, and light-sensing cells interact—and how we can stop or reverse the damage.
IU studies have linked tiny changes in the retina to early signs of Alzheimer’s disease, offering a window into brain health. Other investigations are uncovering how to use stem cells, light-based therapies, and molecular treatments to save or even restore sight.
Philanthropy plays a key role in this progress. Gifts to the Retina Research Fund give scientists the resources to test new ideas, use advanced imaging and gene-editing tools, and train the next generation of vision researchers. These efforts improve both our understanding of eye disease, and the care patients receive every day.
Your support helps IU researchers push the boundaries of vision science—protecting sight, improving lives, and bringing hope to people affected by retinal disease.
