Founded in 1970, South Bend helped launch an experiment in medical education: Could physicians be trained at a network of regional campuses? Back then, it started with 10 students. Today, our South Bend campus is a full-fledged four-year program, enrolling almost 80 students who call Raclin-Carmichael Hall home.

In addition to traditional medical education, the campus offers a scholarly concentration in ethics and equity of care. Students learn about the social determinants of health and ways to address health-related social needs. They also integrate that knowledge into clinical care. At nearby Notre Dame, they can earn a master’s degree in global health or pursue a dual doctoral degree.

Our students gain clinical experience in inpatient and outpatient facilities in surrounding communities like Elkhart, La Porte, Goshen, and Mishawaka. They also staff the Navari Student Outreach Clinic, which offers free health care to uninsured and underserved patients. Students pursuing family medicine also have the option of entering a residency program in proximity to hospitals in South Bend and Mishawaka.

The faculty explore various issues, including the circuitry of pain and infectious disease. Ernestine Raclin and O.C. Carmichael Hall is also home to a specialized core for imaging and analyzing the chemical characteristics of cells. Faculty also joined with peers from Notre Dame to form the Harper Cancer Research Institute, which does vital work on breast, ovarian, and pancreatic cancers.

Much of this work unfolds in Raclin-Carmichael, which opened in 2005. The facility includes an anatomy facility, two wireless classrooms, a library, and a study suite. There are also conference rooms with virtual meeting capabilities. Finally, the facility also has a student lounge and kitchenette.
