Professor Kimberly L. Geeslin was a once-in-a-lifetime friend, mentor, educator, and colleague. She passed away unexpectedly from complications from cancer treatment on January 25, 2023, at the age of 51.
The Kimberly L. Geeslin Memorial Fellowship is an endowment that commemorates her memory by supporting graduate students in Hispanic Linguistics within Indiana University's Department of Spanish and Portuguese. Geeslin joined the department in the fall of 1999 and remained there for her entire career.
Professor Geeslin was a world-renowned scholar specializing in research at the intersection of second-language acquisition and sociolinguistics. She was an author and editor of nine books and over 85 article-length publications. In her time at IU, she won two career teaching awards, chaired more than 20 doctoral dissertations, and served in numerous impactful administrative and leadership positions within her department and across Indiana University. In December 2022, before her passing, Professor Geeslin was named Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs after serving as Associate Vice Provost for five years.
For Professor Geeslin, the professional was also personal. She will be remembered for her kindness, her support and encouragement for others, and her mentorship that extended widely and in ways big and small. Help us honor her legacy by making a gift today.
