Joyce Grandorf, BS’64, an alumna of the School of Education, and James “Jim” Grandorf, BS’63, MBA’64, an alumnus of the Kelley School of Business, generously established the Joyce Grandorf Global Gateway Scholarship, which benefits School of Education students who are participating in the Global Gateway for Teachers program. Supporters of this scholarship continue this effort, helping remove financial barriers to this life-changing student teaching experience.
Jim had a long career with ExxonMobil and spent time as a clinical professor at the Kelley School. Joyce was a tremendous supporter of Jim throughout his career. The couple lived abroad in Singapore from 1977 – 1980 and were avid travelers. These experiences led them to believe that studying abroad is important for all students. Jim spoke to the couple’s shared belief that students’ education is much more well-rounded when they immerse themselves in another culture: “If we can help some students do that and bring it back into the classroom, we’re happy to help.”

As a future social studies educator, I believe it is essential to teach students from global perspectives, helping them develop critical thinking skills and historical empathy. My time in Germany will help me build these practices, and I’m so excited to be able to bring the world into my future classroom.
