Additional Info

Your gift to the Human Biology Program Fund can open the door to some of the most transformative educational experiences a student can have at Indiana University—from immersive study abroad opportunities to team-based lab research and more.

In intensive international study abroad programs, Human Biology students explore the interconnectedness between human, animal, and environmental systems. Rather than learning from textbooks alone, students immerse themselves directly in real-world settings with local organizations focused on sustainability and community resilience, including renewable energy facilities, biological field stations, and farming communities. This place-based learning allows students to turn theory into practice and see how complex systems—from ecosystems to human communities—interact with and depend on one another.

Another high-impact opportunity for Human Biology students is hands-on, multidisciplinary research. Working alongside faculty mentors and graduate students, our undergraduates can gain experience in a variety of scientific methods, from laboratory techniques and data collection to field observation and analysis. They design and execute original projects, analyze results, and collaborate with peers and scientists, developing skills in problem-solving, teamwork, and scientific communication. This type of learning gives students a deeper understanding of complex biological and environmental systems, strengthens their critical thinking, and helps them develop practical skills that prepare them for careers in science, health, and related fields.

All too often, financial considerations become the deciding factor in whether students take advantage of opportunities like these. Your gift can help cover a wide range of needs—including, but not limited to: travel, housing, program fees, and field expenses; supplies and equipment for research experiences; lab materials, field equipment, travel to research sites, and software for data analysis. All of these are costs that might prevent otherwise talented and motivated students from making the most of their Human Biology education.

But your gift does more than cover expenses. It nurtures curiosity, broadens worldviews, builds confidence, and strengthens academic and professional growth—all of which empowers students to become thoughtful, engaged, and capable leaders ready to address real-world challenges.

Thank you for your generous support!

Your giving matters

Studying abroad in Costa Rica reshaped my understanding of what it means to truly coexist with the world around me, showing me that every choice I make leaves a footprint beyond myself. Surrounded by a culture that honors the earth, I learned that when I care for the environment with intention and respect, I am also protecting my own future within it.
