Small cell lung cancer research needs your help.

This is our inaugural attempt to pay it forward by supporting lifesaving small cell lung cancer (SCLC) translational “bench to bedside” research. This work is currently led by Misty Dawn Shields, MD, PhD, at the IU Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Shields is developing next-line therapies for this unique form of cancer that evolves over time to evade treatment.
 
As you may be aware, funding for cancer research has dropped precipitously. Although researchers like Dr. Shields are diligently pursuing grants to support their lab, she is among countless cancer researchers all pursuing the same limited funds. Unfortunately, that can make it difficult to keep the proverbial lights on.

We hope you will take a few minutes to read about the commitment, compassion, and research talent Dr. Shields thoughtfully employs to change SCLC from nearly always quickly fatal to the new reality for hundreds of patients like me who have achieved near complete resolution of SCLC! In my case, a large inoperable primary lung tumor wrapped around my windpipe, plus liver, spinal, and bone marrow metastases. As we recover from 18 months of ongoing treatment enabling us to achieve more life milestones together, giving back is strongly in our hearts – helping physician scientists like Dr. Shields get through lean funding times is one way to do so. We are reaching out via this effort to supplement our own funding support which falls far short of the lab’s $300,000 annual budget. For anyone interested, Dr. Shields would be pleased to provide a tour of her lab.
 
Your contribution, no matter the size, would mean the world to us and to researchers like Dr. Shields. (All funds contributed will be directed through the IU Foundation and may be tax deductible as allowed by law.)
