Uniting for Students

By Social Work

In July 2023, our South Bend faculty recognized the many financial barriers our students were facing and set out to make a positive change. They created the Dr. Carol Rippey Massat Social Work Scholarship for IUSB social work students in need of financial assistance. Over the past year our faculty, staff, social work friends and alumni have raised $10,026. Our internal goal is to raise $25,000 for student support and success. We are almost half way there and we need your help to achieve our target and award our first Massat Scholarship in 2025.

We encourage young adults to pursue their dreams, but for some it’s never been harder to earn a social work education. Tuition costs and fear of insurmountable student loan debt are discouraging for some. We also know some of our social work students on the South Bend campus are food insecure. That’s why we helped create a food pantry to make sure our students don’t go hungry. But their needs don’t end there. Students are challenged by high rent costs, transportation expenses to travel to their practicums, groceries, childcare, care of family members with disabilities etc. And we can’t ignore the hidden personal and emotional costs of past trauma, abuse, poverty, loss, discrimination and health issues. For some, a social work education is a tall mountain to climb alone. In July 2023, the Social Work faculty and staff recognized the evolving needs of our students and created the Dr. Carol Rippey Massat Scholarship to support undergraduate or graduate social work students studying on the South Bend Campus who have financial need. Our goal is to raise $25,000 and award the first Massat Scholarship in 2025. As of today, we have raised $10,026. We need your help to raise the remaining $14,974. The sooner we can help mitigate the relentless financial pressures our students are facing, the better. Your gift today will provide much needed funds to a social work student in need. Thank you!
