Freedom Summer is a three credit study tour offered through IU South Bend that provides a deep and immersive exploration of the Civil Rights Movement by visiting the places where this history unfolded. The course fulfills major requirements or electives for most IUSB students and is led every two to four years by IU South Bend faculty. During this intensive fourteen day journey through the American South, students travel to significant historic sites and hear directly from individuals connected to the movement, engaging both academically and personally with this pivotal period in our nation’s history. The itinerary includes locations such as the National Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta, crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, and traveling through the Mississippi Delta with a stop in Indianola, among many others. At each site, students tour museums, monuments, and churches, meet community leaders and witnesses to history, and gain a tangible understanding of the courage and sacrifice that shaped the movement. By standing where history happened and engaging in meaningful dialogue, students are challenged to reflect on their own role in civic life and community leadership. Gifts to this fund provide essential general support to sustain this life changing educational experience and ensure that future students can learn, grow, and lead with greater insight and purpose.
